The Cambridge English: Legal (ILEC) 

Level B2-C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

Cambridge English: Legal is a high-level English language exam for law students and practising lawyers who want to work in an international legal setting.

It was developed with TransLegal – Europe’s leading firm of lawyer-linguists.

The exam gives a detailed assessment of your ability to operate in a legal context and uses real-life legal situations you would expect to encounter as a lawyer. It covers all four language skills (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking).

This qualifciation can help you find a job in an international commercial law context or study law in English in your own country or abroad.

The Cambridge English: Legal (ILEC) certificate shows that you can:

  • participate in legal meetings and discussions
  • express opinions clearly
  • unterstand and produce legal reports and other texts

The Cambridge English: Legal (ILEC) will be discontinued as of December 2016!

The last exam date is 9 December 2016.

The Exam Format

Cambridge exams are designed to ensure standardised test conditions for people of all linguistic backgrounds and nationalities and are supported by a dedicated global research programme.

The exam covers all four language skills (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking), using real-life situations with a legal context.

Cambridge English: Legal (ILEC)-exams are paper-based.

Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes

Target: Shows you can complete tasks based on law-related texts, read and understand law-related texts, demonstrate a variety of reading skills, including skimming, scanning and deduction of meaning from context.

Target: Shows you can complete writing tasks covering a range of law-related topics.

Duration: 40 minutes

Target: Shows you can understand each law-related text as a whole, gain detailed understanding and appreciate gist and the attitude of the speaker and identify and interpret the context.

Texts take the form of consultations, meetings, announcements, seminars, etc.

Duration: 16 minutes
